Charleston, South Carolina: The Best Places to Eat, Shop & Explore

Charleston is one of those cities I could come back to over and over again and never get tired of. Every trip I find a new favorite restaurant, discover another coffee shop, or stumble across a hidden little spot that somehow makes me love it even more.

One of the questions I get asked the most is, “Where should I go in Charleston?” So instead of texting people the same recommendations every time, I decided to put them all in one place.

I’m pretty picky when it comes to recommendations, so if something made this list, it earned its spot. These are the restaurants I keep going back to, the coffee shops I never skip, the rooftops worth staying out for, and the hidden gems I’d tell anyone visiting Charleston not to miss.

Whether it’s your first visit or your fifteenth, I hope this guide helps you experience Charleston the way I have, and maybe even discover a few new favorites of your own.

Downtown Charleston

If it’s your first time visiting Charleston, this is where I’d spend most of my time. Downtown is incredibly walkable, so once you park your car, you can spend hours wandering from coffee shops to boutiques, rooftop bars, waterfront views, and some of the best restaurants in the city. It’s the kind of place where you’ll probably end up discovering a few favorites you weren’t even looking for.

Hotels I’d Recommend

• The Cooper: If you’re looking for a newer, modern, luxury waterfront stay, The Cooper is definitely one to have on your radar. With beautiful harbor views and a more elevated feel, it’s a great option if you want something a little quieter while still being just minutes from downtown.
• The Dewberry Charleston: The Dewberry is one of Charleston’s most iconic luxury hotels, and even if you aren’t staying there, it’s worth stopping by. From the beautifully designed lobby to the Citrus Club rooftop, everything about it feels timeless and elevated.
• The Charleston Place: Located right in the heart of downtown, The Charleston Place is a Charleston classic. Between its beautiful interiors, luxury shopping, and walkable location, it’s an easy recommendation if you want to be close to everything.
• Mills House: You can’t miss The Mills House, its iconic pink exterior has become one of Charleston’s most recognizable landmarks. It’s full of historic charm and sits within walking distance of many of the city’s best restaurants, shops, and attractions.
• The Emeline: The Emeline is one of my favorite hotels to stop into, whether it’s for dinner at Frannie & The Fox or simply to admire the beautifully designed spaces. It has a warm, boutique feel that perfectly matches Charleston’s charm.
• Little Palm: Little Palm has a fun, tropical-inspired atmosphere that feels like a little escape in the middle of downtown. Even if you’re not staying there, it’s worth stopping by for happy hour or drinks with friends.
• The Nickel Hotel: The Nickel is one of Charleston’s newer boutique hotels and has quickly become known for its beautiful rooftop. Whether you’re considering staying there or just stopping by for a sunset drink, it’s definitely worth adding to your list.

Best Coffee Shops in Downtown Charleston

• Baba’s on Cannon: A cozy, neighborhood café with an effortlessly cool feel that transitions from coffee in the morning to wine later in the day. It’s the kind of place you go when you want to slow down and enjoy the atmosphere.

• Sorelle/Mercato for Coffee: MY FAVORITE! A beautifully designed Italian-inspired café and market that feels elevated and refined. Mercato is hands down my favorite coffee stop in Charleston. Every time I’m in town, I find myself coming here to grab their daily coffee special, one of their perfect sandwiches, and a sweet treat (because I can never resist) before settling in to get some work done. It’s become one of my favorite little rituals whenever I visit. Whether you’re looking for a quiet place to catch up on emails or just want a slow morning before exploring downtown, this is one place I never skip.

• Harken Cafe: Harken is one of those coffee shops that just feels good the moment you walk in. It’s bright, welcoming, and the kind of place that’s perfect for a slow morning or an easy breakfast before exploring Charleston. If you’re looking for a coffee shop with a calm atmosphere and great food, this one is definitely worth stopping at.
• The Rise Coffee Bar: If you’re looking for a quick coffee without sacrificing quality, The Rise is a great stop. The space is clean, modern, and perfect for grabbing a drink before heading out to explore downtown. It’s simple, consistently good, and an easy addition to any Charleston itinerary.
• Welton’s Tiny Bakeshop: If you have a sweet tooth, Welton’s is a must. This cozy little bakery is known for its incredible pastries, and it’s the perfect place to pair a coffee with something fresh from the bakery case. It’s one of those spots that feels like a hidden gem.
• Summit Coffee: Summit is one of those coffee shops that’s easy to keep coming back to. It has a warm, welcoming atmosphere, great coffee, and plenty of space whether you’re catching up with a friend or getting a little work done. It’s the kind of neighborhood coffee shop every city should have.

Best Restaurants Downtown

• Marbled & Fin: If you’re in the mood to treat yourself to a really good dinner, Marbled & Fin deserves a spot on your list. It has that classic steakhouse feel while still feeling modern, making it a great choice for a date night, celebration, or just a memorable meal while you’re in Charleston.

• Sorelle/Mercato for Coffee: If you’re visiting Mercato, don’t skip Sorelle. Located right next door, it’s where I almost always start my morning in Charleston. I’ll grab their daily coffee special, one of their incredible sandwiches, and a sweet treat before getting some work done or heading out to explore downtown. The space is beautiful, the food is consistently amazing, and it’s become one of my favorite little rituals every time I’m in town. Then, when evening rolls around, Sorelle is the perfect place to come back for dinner.
• Frannie and the Fox: If someone asked me where to go for dinner in Charleston, Frannie & The Fox would be one of the first places I’d recommend. Located inside The Emeline Hotel, it’s one of those restaurants that gets everything right, the courtyard is beautiful, the atmosphere is lively without feeling overwhelming, and it’s just as good for dinner as it is for grabbing drinks. It’s one of those places that always feels like a good idea.

• Felix: If you’re looking for a dinner spot that feels fun, stylish, and a little more upscale, I’d definitely recommend Felix. It’s the kind of place that’s just as good for a date night as it is for dinner with friends, and the atmosphere alone makes it worth the reservation.

• Indaco: Indaco is one of my go-to recommendations if you’re craving Italian while you’re in Charleston. It’s the kind of place that’s perfect for sharing a few dishes around the table, enjoying a glass of wine, and taking your time. The handmade pasta is always worth ordering, and the atmosphere is cozy without feeling too formal.

• The Darling Oyster Bar: If you’re looking for a classic Charleston seafood experience, The Darling is always one of my recommendations. Whether you’re stopping in for oysters, cocktails, or a full dinner, it’s one of those places that feels lively no matter what time you go. It’s popular for a reason, and definitely lives up to the hype.
• Lenior: A more intimate, tucked-away spot that feels cozy and thoughtfully curated. It’s perfect for a quieter dinner when you want something a little more low-key but still elevated.

• Amen Street Fish and Raw Bar: Amen Street will always be a little nostalgic for me because it was the very first place I had dinner when I visited Charleston. Ever since then, it’s been one of those restaurants I love recommending to anyone looking for a classic Charleston seafood experience. If you’re craving fresh seafood, oysters, or just want to kick off your trip with a great meal, this is a great place to start.

• Iron Rose: Located inside The Mills House, Iron Rose is a great choice if you’re looking for a dinner that feels a little more elevated. The space is beautiful, the atmosphere is relaxed yet polished, and it’s the kind of place that’s perfect for a date night or a slower evening downtown.
• Lewis BBQ: If barbecue is your thing, don’t leave Charleston without stopping at Lewis BBQ. It’s one of those places that people rave about for a reason. It’s casual, the portions are generous, and the food is absolutely worth the trip. Just be prepared for a line during the busy hours, it moves quickly and it’s worth the wait.
• Timber Pizza Co: If you want a really good pizza, and Timber delivers every time. It’s casual, fun, and perfect for an easy lunch or dinner after a day of exploring. If you’re traveling with a group or just want something a little more laid-back, this is an easy recommendation.

Touristy Things to Do in Downtown Charleston

• Charleston City Market: If it’s your first time in Charleston, you have to walk through the City Market at least once. It’s one of the city’s most iconic spots, filled with local vendors, handmade goods, sweetgrass baskets, and plenty of little souvenirs. Even if you’re just browsing, it’s worth experiencing while you’re downtown.
• Rainbow Row: You can’t visit Charleston without at least once stopping by Rainbow Row. The colorful historic homes are even prettier in person and make one of the most iconic photo spots in the city. I always find myself walking through this area, even if it’s just to admire the architecture.
• Pineapple Fountain: It’s the perfect place to take in the harbor views, enjoy the breeze, and of course stop by the iconic Pineapple Fountain. If the weather is nice, it’s one of those places you’ll naturally want to linger a little longer.
• Bike or Run The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge: Walking or running the Ravenel Bridge is one of the best ways to take in the views of Charleston from above. The path stretches across the Cooper River and feels both peaceful and scenic, especially in the morning or around sunset. It’s a great way to slow down, get some movement in, and see a different side of the city.

• Bike Taxi: If you see a bike taxi while you’re walking around downtown, hop on one. They’re a fun (and surprisingly convenient) way to get from place to place, and I especially love taking one after a night out. It’s one of those little Charleston experiences that makes the evening even more memorable.

Concerts & Festivals

Riverfront Park

If you’re visiting Charleston, definitely check the Riverfront Park event schedule before your trip. They host some of the best concerts and festivals throughout the year, and there’s honestly nothing better than live music on the water.

North Charleston Coliseum & Performing Arts Center

Most of the bigger concerts, Broadway shows, comedians, and sporting events come through here. It’s always worth checking who’s performing, you might end up planning your trip around a show.

Best Sushi in Charleston

• Shiki: If you’re craving sushi but want something a little more low-key, Shiki is a great choice. It has a more intimate feel than some of the trendier restaurants in Charleston, and it’s one of those places that’s all about the food.

• Shokudo: If you’re looking for a sushi experience that feels a little more modern, Shokudo is definitely worth a visit. The menu is incredibly unique, the presentation is beautiful, and the entire restaurant has a sleek, upscale feel without being overly formal. It’s one of my favorite spots when I’m in the mood for something a little different than your traditional sushi night.

• Oku: If you’re planning a fun night out, Oku is a great place to start. The rooftop, lively atmosphere, and incredible sushi make it one of my favorite spots when I want dinner to feel like more than just a meal. It’s the kind of place where you’ll probably end up staying longer than you planned.
• Locals Sushi & Sports Pub – West Ashley: One of my favorite casual spots in West Ashley when I’m craving sushi. It has a fun, laid-back atmosphere with plenty of TVs for game days, a great happy hour, and weekly sushi specials that make it an easy place to keep coming back to. Whether you’re there for the sushi, tacos, or just to watch a game, it’s a solid neighborhood go-to. 

Dessert Bar

• Carmellas Dessert Bar: If there’s one dessert spot I’m recommending, it’s Carmella’s. It’s hands down my favorite place to end the night in Charleston. Whether you’re craving a slice of cake, a pastry, gelato, or pretty much anything sweet, the menu has it all. I somehow end up here almost every trip, and I never regret it.

Charleston Nightlife: Rooftop Bars, Cocktails & Live Music

Fun/Popular Bars:

• Prohibition: If you’re looking for a fun night out without committing to a club, Prohibition is always a solid choice. Between the live music, craft cocktails, and lively atmosphere, it’s one of my favorite places to grab a drink and keep the night going. It has just the right amount of energy without ever feeling over the top.
• Uptown Social: Uptown Social is always busy and has a fun, energetic atmosphere. It’s personally not my favorite once it gets packed later in the night, but I do think it’s worth stopping by earlier if you want to experience it before the crowds take over.

• Cocktail Club: If you’re looking for a quieter spot to start or end the night, The Cocktail Club is one of my favorites. It has a cozy, speakeasy feel with incredible cocktails and a rooftop patio that’s easy to miss if you don’t know it’s there. It’s the perfect place if you’re looking for something a little more relaxed than the bars on King Street.
• On Air: If you’re in the mood to dance, On Air is a fun place to end the night. It has a younger, high-energy crowd, great music, and is one of the more popular late-night spots downtown. If you’re looking for a quieter evening, I’d probably skip it, but if you’re ready for a fun night out, it’s definitely worth checking out.
  • On Air Instagram: One thing I always recommend before heading out is checking Instagram to see what’s happening that weekend. Charleston always seems to have something going on, whether it’s live music, pop-ups, themed nights, or local events, and Instagram is usually the best place to find out what’s happening while you’re in town. On Air posts theirs often.

• Henry’s: Henry’s is a Charleston classic and one of those places everyone seems to end up at eventually. Between the live music, multiple floors, and lively atmosphere, it’s a great stop if you’re hopping around King Street for the night.

Favorite Cocktail Bars

• The Belmont: If you’re looking for a more intimate spot away from the louder bars, The Belmont is one of my favorites. The cocktails are incredible, the atmosphere is cozy and dimly lit, and it’s the kind of place that’s perfect for a date night or catching up with friends over a really good drink.

• Felix: Felix isn’t just one of my favorite dinner spots, it’s also somewhere I’d happily stay for drinks after. The atmosphere is beautiful, the bar is always lively, and it’s one of those places where dinner naturally turns into cocktails without anyone wanting to leave.
• Madison Maison (Caviar Bump) and Ritual: Madison Maison is known for its champagne and caviar-forward experience, making it a fun, more elevated stop to start the night. Just up the stairs, Ritual brings a higher-energy, nightlife feel, so it’s easy to move between the two depending on the vibe you’re looking for.

Rooftop Bars:

• The Nickel Hotel: If you’re looking for a rooftop with a more elevated feel, The Nickel is hard to beat. I love coming here for a sunset cocktail or happy hour before dinner. Between the views and the atmosphere, it’s one of those places that makes you want to slow down and stay awhile.
• The Rooftop at The Vendue: If you’re looking for a rooftop with a little more energy, The Rooftop is a great choice. The views overlooking the harbor are beautiful, and it’s the kind of place that’s perfect for grabbing a drink, meeting up with friends, and watching the sun go down before heading out for the night.

• The Citrus Club at The Dewberry: Everything about it feels elegant, from the beautifully designed space to the incredible views over the city. It’s one of my favorite places to grab a drink around sunset, and even if you aren’t staying at The Dewberry, it’s absolutely worth stopping by.
• Stars Rooftop and Grill Room: Stars is a great option if you’re looking for something a little more casual. It overlooks King Street, so it’s a fun place to grab a drink, people-watch, and soak in the energy of downtown without feeling too dressed up or formal.

Best Happy Hours

• Little Palm (Happy Hour): Little Palm is one of my favorite happy hour spots in Charleston. It has a fun, tropical feel that’s a little different from everywhere else downtown, and it’s the perfect place to meet up with friends before dinner or kick off a night out. If the weather’s nice, definitely try to grab a table outside.

• The Darling Oyster Bar (Happy Hour): If you love oysters, The Darling is one of my favorite happy hour stops downtown. It’s the perfect place to grab a drink and a few oysters before dinner or while you’re making your way through King Street. The bar always has a great energy, especially later in the afternoon.
• The Archer: If you’re looking for somewhere that feels a little more elevated without being overly fancy, The Archer is such a good pick. The space is beautiful, the food is incredible, and it’s one of those places that makes dinner feel like an experience.

Karaoke:

• The Bangkok Lounge: Bangkok Lounge feels like one of Charleston’s best-kept secrets. From the outside, you’d never guess there’s a lively karaoke bar tucked inside. It’s fun, a little rowdy, and one of my favorite places to end the night if you’re looking for something different than the typical King Street bar scene.

Late-Night Eats

• Benny Ravello’s: If you end up staying out on King Street, do yourself a favor and grab a slice from Benny’s before heading home. The pizza is massive, it hits every time, and it’s basically a Charleston rite of passage after a night out.
• Charleston Gyro Truck Downtown (King of Shawarma): Another late-night classic. If you see a line, that’s your sign to stop. It’s quick, delicious, and one of my favorite post-night-out food spots downtown.

Other Honorable Mentions

• Charleston Coffee Exchange: If you’re looking for a solid local coffee shop that’s a little more understated, Charleston Coffee Exchange is a great stop. It has a classic neighborhood feel, consistently good coffee, and is perfect if you’re looking to grab something before heading out for the day.

• The Wedge: If you’re over in West Ashley, don’t skip The Wedge. It has a relaxed neighborhood feel, great staff, and some of my favorite sandwiches in the Charleston area. The Hangover reminds me so much of my favorite breakfast sandwich from back home in Connecticut, so it’s become one of those places I genuinely look forward to visiting every time I’m here.

• The Brown Fox: If you’re looking for a coffee shop that’s a little quieter and away from the downtown crowds, The Brown Fox is a great choice. It has a cozy, welcoming atmosphere that’s perfect for easing into the morning or grabbing a coffee before starting your day.
• Pour House: If you love live music, definitely check out Charleston Pour House while you’re in town. They have live performances almost every night, featuring a mix of local artists and touring bands, and it’s one of the best places to experience Charleston’s music scene. Before you go, I’d recommend checking their calendar to see who’s playing—you might just discover your new favorite artist.

• I’on Canal Path: If you’re looking for a quiet walk away from the crowds, the I’On Canal Path is such a peaceful spot. Tucked inside one of Mount Pleasant’s most beautiful neighborhoods, it’s the perfect place to slow down, enjoy the scenery, and experience a different side of Charleston.
• Pitt St Bridge: Pitt Street Bridge is one of my favorite places to catch a sunset. It has incredible marsh views, a peaceful walking path, and feels like one of those hidden local spots that’s worth getting off the beaten path for.

Live Music Worth Following

One thing I love about Charleston is that there’s almost always live music somewhere. If you’re visiting, I’d definitely recommend checking these artists’ schedules before your trip, you might end up planning your night around them.

• Me and Mr. Jones: If you see Me and Mr. Jones playing, go. They always draw a crowd, play a mix of songs everyone knows, and somehow get the entire room singing along by the end of the night.
• Greyson Little: Greyson Little is one of my favorite local artists to watch. His mix of country and rock makes for such a fun night out, and he’s someone I always look forward to seeing whenever he’s playing around Charleston.
• The Midnight City Band: If you’re looking for a high-energy band that keeps people on the dance floor all night, The Midnight City Band never disappoints. They’re always a fun choice if you’re looking for a lively night out.

Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant sits just across the bridge from downtown Charleston and is home to some of the best waterfront restaurants in the area.

Shem Creek: If I had to recommend one place in Mount Pleasant, it’d be Shem Creek. It’s one of my favorite spots to grab dinner, watch the boats come in, and catch the sunset. Whether you’re stopping for drinks or staying for dinner, it’s one of those places that perfectly captures Charleston’s coastal lifestyle.

• Muddy’s Dockside: If you’re looking for something casual on the water, Muddy’s is a great choice. It’s relaxed, laid-back, and the kind of place where you can grab a drink, order seafood, and enjoy the view without feeling like you need to dress up.
• Saltwater Cowboys: Saltwater Cowboys is one of my favorite places to watch the sunset on Shem Creek. Between the marsh views, boats, and laid-back atmosphere, it’s one of those places I always recommend when someone asks where they should go for dinner outside of downtown.
• NICO Oysters + Seafood: If you’re looking for something a little more elevated on Shem Creek, NICO is a great option. It has a beautiful waterfront setting, incredible seafood, and feels a little more refined while still giving you the same amazing views.

Beach Days Near Charleston

Folly Beach

Folly has a completely different vibe from Sullivan’s. It’s a little more lively and social, making it a great option if you’re looking for a beach day with bars, live music, and things to do nearby. It’s also one of the best spots for shark teeth hunting if you’re willing to spend some time walking the shoreline.

Favorite Places To Eat:

• The Pineapple Hut: I am addicted to this place. I must get it every time I go to Folly. If you’re looking for the perfect tropical treat on a hot beach day, don’t skip this one.

• Catch 23: I’m just as addicted to Catch 23 as I am The Pineapple Hut. If I’ve spent the day at Folly, there’s a very good chance I’m ending it here. It’s casual, consistently good, and one of those places I find myself recommending over and over again.

• Dead Low Coffee: A perfect coffee stop just off the main beach area with a more local feel. It’s locally owned with a fun vibe and a must grab before the beach.
• Chico Feo: If you want to experience the true Folly Beach vibe, Chico Feo is the place to go. Between the tacos, live music, and laid-back outdoor atmosphere, it’s one of those places where you can lose track of time. It feels casual, local, and exactly how a beach town should.

Folly Beach Bars:

• The Bounty Bar: If you’re not quite ready for the beach day to end, The Bounty Bar is a fun place to keep the afternoon going. It has a chill crowd, great drinks, and that easygoing beach atmosphere that makes Folly so much fun.
• Sand Dollar Social Club: A more relaxed outdoor bar with a social, local feel and live music. It’s perfect for a casual drink and a slower, laid-back night.
• Taco Boy: A fun, lively taco spot right near the beach with a great outdoor setup and upbeat atmosphere. It’s perfect for a casual meal or drinks after a day in the sun.

Other:

• Bert’s Market: A Folly Beach staple. It’s open 24 hours and somehow always has exactly what you need, whether it’s beach essentials, a late-night snack, drinks, or something you forgot to pack. If you’re spending the day on Folly, chances are you’ll end up stopping here at least once.

Sullivan’s Island

If you’re looking for a quieter beach day, Sullivan’s Island is always my recommendation. It has a much more relaxed, local feel than Folly, and it’s the kind of place where you can spend the day at the beach, grab a great meal, and wander through the little shops without ever feeling rushed. One of the biggest perks? Street parking is free anywhere there isn’t a posted sign, which makes beach days so much easier.

• Sullivan’s Island Beach: One of the most beautiful and relaxed beaches near Charleston with a quieter, more local feel. A huge plus is the free street parking, you can park anywhere as long as there isn’t a posted sign, which makes it easy to spend a full day here.
• Obstinate Daughter: A standout restaurant on Sullivan’s Island known for its seasonal menu and beautifully executed dishes. It’s one of those places that feels elevated but still relaxed, and always worth making a reservation for.
• Sullivans Fish Camp: A newer, stylish seafood spot with a laid-back coastal feel. It’s a great place to go after the beach for a casual but well-done meal.
• Dunleavy’s Pub (Block Party for St. Patty’s Day): A casual, local favorite with a laid-back island vibe. It’s especially known for its St. Patrick’s Day block party, which brings a fun, high-energy crowd and is one of the more iconic events in the area.
• Cute Shopping Boutiques: Sullivan’s Island has a small selection of charming, local boutiques that are perfect for a quick stop while you’re out exploring. It’s less about major shopping and more about discovering little coastal finds and enjoying the slower pace of the island.

Escape the City: John’s Island

If you’re willing to venture just outside of downtown, John’s Island is well worth the drive. It has a completely different pace than the city, less crowded, more laid-back, and full of hidden gems that make you feel like you’ve stumbled onto the local side of Charleston. It’s the perfect place to slow down, take the scenic route, and enjoy a long lunch or dinner without the hustle and bustle of downtown.

• Lost Isle: Lost Isle feels like one of Charleston’s best-kept secrets. Tucked away on the water, it’s the kind of place you could easily spend a few hours without realizing it. Between the waterfront views, tropical atmosphere, and great food, it’s one of my favorite spots if I’m looking for a slower afternoon or dinner that feels like a little escape.
• Wild Olive: If you’re craving Italian, Wild Olive is absolutely worth the drive. It’s cozy, intimate, and one of those restaurants that feels perfect for slowing down over a great meal. The handmade pasta is what they’re known for, and it’s easy to see why people keep coming back.
• Angel Oak Tree: If it’s your first time visiting Charleston, I’d definitely make time to see the Angel Oak. Estimated to be hundreds of years old, it’s one of the most iconic landmarks in the Lowcountry and somehow even more impressive in person. It’s a quick stop, but one you’ll remember long after your trip.
